Trek to Sagam La: Walking the Sacred Trails of Subansiri

Introduction

Hidden in the remote folds of Arunachal Pradesh, where the Subansiri river roars against cliffs and forests, lies Sagam La—a high pass along the mystical Takpa Siri ridge. Known as both a pilgrim’s route and an explorer’s frontier, Sagam La is not just a trek, but a journey through living history, spirituality, and raw Himalayan adventure.

---

The Call of Takpa Siri

For centuries, Tibetan pilgrims walked these mountains in sacred circuits called Ringkor and Kingkor, circling Takpa Siri, a peak revered as one of the holiest in Tibetan Buddhism. Sagam La was one of the gateways—linking villages, sacred lakes, and mountain passes. After 1962, with borders sealed, the pilgrimages faded, but the stories remain alive in every ridge and prayer flag fluttering in the wind.

The Journey Begins

Our trek started from Limikang, a tiny settlement where time seems to move slower. Bamboo forests and wooden bridges welcomed us, but the true adventure began when the Subansiri river demanded respect. Narrow suspension bridges swayed with every step, and towering wooden ladders clung precariously to rock faces.

Each climb was nerve-wracking, each descent a test of balance—holding on to roots, ropes, or sheer willpower. Yet the rhythm of walking through forests of pine and bamboo, punctuated by the sound of the river, made the hardship melt into awe.

The Spirit of the Land

What sets Sagam La apart is not just the landscape—it’s the spiritual energy that fills the valleys. Along the trail are tsukangs (caves) where monks once meditated, and stories of sacred lakes like Potrang Tso and Kyomu Tso, said to mirror the soul of Takpa Siri itself.

Even today, villagers speak with reverence of the circumambulations once performed here, their voices mixing respect with nostalgia. Every rock and stream seems to carry the whispers of those pilgrim footsteps.

Crossing Sagam La

At last, climbing steadily through dense forest and wind-swept ridges, we reached Sagam La. At over 4,000 meters, the air was thin, the silence broken only by the wind. To the north, peaks brushed with snow lined the horizon. To the south, the Subansiri valley stretched endlessly.

Prayer flags marked the pass, their colors faded but their presence eternal. Standing there, between two worlds—India and Tibet, past and present—I felt both humbled and elevated.
